It hasn't. This is the second one.
What ran for seventeen years didn't end quietly
Before Newtopia Cyder ever hosted a single vendor booth, Scripps Ranch had a different farmers market, one that ran every Saturday for roughly 17 years in the parking lot of what was then the Innovations Academy site at 10380 Spring Canyon Road, next to Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary. That market wasn't just a place to buy produce. It operated as an ongoing fundraiser for the school, with a meaningful share of vendor proceeds routed back to Ellen Browning Scripps.
It closed in October 2018, and not because interest dried up or vendors stopped showing. The San Diego Unified School District board voted to redevelop the property where the market had been held, and that vote ended the market's run on that site. A market with nearly two decades of Saturday mornings behind it disappeared because the ground it stood on belonged to an institution with other plans for the parcel.
That's easy to miss if you only started coming to the Thursday market in the last few years. The current market at Newtopia Cyder can look like the neighborhood's original, longstanding tradition. It's actually a second attempt, built by people who watched the first one get shut out from under them.
Same organizers, different landlord
The revival wasn't a stranger's idea. Beverly and Mike Cassity, who had managed the old Saturday market at the school, worked with Newtopia Cyder owner Rick Moreno to open a new weekly event in the cidery's own parking lot at 10045 Carroll Canyon Road. The choice of location matters more than it looks. A school district lot is public property, subject to board votes, redevelopment plans, and academic priorities that have nothing to do with Saturday produce sales. A cidery's parking lot is private commercial real estate, and the business that owns it has a direct financial reason to keep drawing a Thursday-night crowd through its doors.
That's the quiet difference between the two markets. The first one was a guest on land that eventually needed itself back. The second one is hosted by a landlord whose own interest lines up with the market's survival.
